A&B Waltham Concrete

Concrete Contractor in Weston, MA - Slabs Planned Around Septic and Wetlands

We're A&B Waltham Concrete, a concrete contractor based in Waltham. We pour driveways, patios, walkways, steps, retaining walls and foundations for homes in Weston, MA, and plan each one around the lot it sits on.

Weston jobs start below the slab. Septic, wetlands and water come first.

Every property in Weston runs on a private septic system, and over half the town sits in the Cambridge Water Supply Zone, where certain restrictions apply. On a job here, what's under and around the slab has to be settled before we talk about finish.

We come over from Waltham for driveways, patios, steps and a new concrete sidewalk, the same work we do in Watertown and Wellesley.

I start with the ground. Then we talk about the surface.

When I come out, I check the subgrade, the soil the slab will sit on, plus truck access and what the town will want to review. Size, thickness, how much digging and base work the ground needs, access and the finish set the price, while permits and reviews mostly set the schedule. Your written estimate spells out what's included.

  • Where the septic tank and drain field sit
  • Which way water runs off the slab
  • How close the nearest wetland or stream is
  • Where trucks can reach without crossing septic

Good base work stays hidden. Bad base work shows up later.

Rake a base level instead of digging it out and packing it, and the slab settles with the dirt and cracks where nobody chose. Pour in midday heat and the top turns weak and dusty. Tip it toward the house and the water follows it in.

Nobody sees the base on day one, so it's the first thing people want to trim and the last thing I will. We dig out to firm ground, pack it, slope the slab away from the house and cut control joints, shallow grooves that give cracks a straight line to follow.

From first call to final walk. Here's how a Weston job runs.

  1. 01. You get in touch

Call (781) 622-9470 or send the form with a few lines about your lot and the job, and we'll set up a time to come out.

  2. 02. I walk your lot

I come out for the estimate myself, look at the ground, access and drainage, and ask how you plan to use the concrete.

  3. 03. Written estimate and permits

Your written estimate lists what's included. New construction or an addition needs a meeting with the town's Permit Administrator first, and we line that up.

  4. 04. The work and walk-through

Our crew lead runs it, with me at key steps, inside town hours, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Then we walk it with you.

Tell us about your Weston job. I'll come look at it.

Send your address, what you want poured or fixed and where the septic sits. We reply within one business day to set a free on-site estimate, no obligation.

Weston has its own rules. Here's what they mean for concrete.

Start with the answers below. If your question isn't here, call (781) 622-9470 and I'll answer it while we set up a visit.

Do I need a permit for a concrete driveway or patio in Weston?

Ask Weston's Building Department, which issues building permits in town, because the answer can turn on the job and the lot. New construction, an addition or a pool also needs a separate Board of Health application. We work out which office your job runs through and handle the permit steps for our work.

Does a new driveway in Weston need stormwater review?

It may if it adds more than 750 square feet of new hard surface, because Weston's Stormwater Engineer reviews projects that could change how water runs off a lot. Grading or earthwork over 5,000 square feet, or over 20% of the lot, may need review too. I'll flag it at the estimate when your plan comes close.

Do I need Conservation Commission approval to pour near a wetland in Weston?

You need a Conservation Commission application for work within 100 feet of a wetland, pond or seasonal stream, or within 200 feet of a perennial stream. No work at all is allowed in the 25-foot no-disturb buffer, and cutting trees in a wetland area or buffer needs an application too.

Does a short concrete retaining wall need a permit in Weston?

Not a building permit, the town says, if the wall stands less than 36 inches above the existing natural grade. A taller wall is a question for the Building Department, and a wall of any height near a wetland or stream still needs the Conservation Commission application.

Is my pre-1945 house in Weston subject to historic review?

It is if the house is on the town's Historic Resource Inventory or Map of Historic Areas, and that Historical Commission review covers exterior repairs and remodeling, not just demolition. Call the Building Department at 781-786-5061 to check your address before we plan steps or foundation work against the house.

Do I need a permit to widen my driveway at the street in Weston?

Curb and road work goes through Weston's Department of Public Works, which handles Curb Cut Driveway Opening Permits and Street Opening Permits and can give details at 781-786-5100. A public road paved within the last five years is under a moratorium on new cuts, so check that before planning a wider entrance.
